Why do we have a Holiday Sing?
According to our Poorman matriarch and historian Vera Evenson, “We have been gathering to sing and socialize during this holiday since the late 1960’s. The first carolers in our community were the Nord family. Characteristically loving and community-minded, our beloved neighbor Ruth Nord and her daughter Merry began the tradition of walking around and singing Christmas carols to each home in our developing community here. In following years others wanted to join so we decided to meet in the Ballfield and sing together around a glowing bonfire.
Eventually we established the date always to be the 23rd and of course the socializing afterwards in one of our homes became an essential part of the gathering too. The celebration was called the Christmas Sing at first but as our neighborhood grew and diversified we changed the name to the Holiday Sing.”
